Ask a tour company about the arena floor and you get a photo of a wooden deck. That deck is real, but it is not the floor the Ministry of Culture announced in 2021: a full reconstruction across the oval, with panels that turn to let light into the underground.
We went through the official announcements and the Italian press for news of that project, and for the works that changed the monument this year. Here is the state of play as of 22 October 2026.
The quick answer
The full new arena floor (EUR 18.5 million, designed by Milan Ingegneria with Labics, promised for 2023) has not been built, and no completion date has been announced. What you walk on today is the platform at the east end, laid around 2000. In 2026 the Park finished the travertine paving of the southern ambulacra outside and moved on to new LED lighting. None of it changes what an arena tour gives you.
What is the new Colosseum arena floor project?
A reversible floor covering the whole arena, made of carbon-fibre slats clad in Accoya wood, with panels that rotate to light and air the underground. It was chosen in May 2021 at a cost of EUR 18.5 million.
The Ministry of Culture picked the winning design in May 2021: a team led by the engineering firm Milan Ingegneria with the architects of Labics and others (Wanted in Rome, Smithsonian). The floor would sit at the level of the Roman one and cover the hypogeum, the two-level warren of corridors and lifts below. Parts of it would turn and slide by remote control, opening the underground to natural light or closing it for events.
Then culture minister Dario Franceschini called it an extraordinary project and promised completion in 2023. In December 2021 the state agency Invitalia launched the works tender, worth over EUR 16 million, with bids due in February 2022.

Has the new arena floor been built?
No. As of October 2026 the full floor has not been installed and the Park has given no completion date.
The 2023 deadline passed with no new floor, and we found no official announcement of a construction start in 2024, 2025 or 2026. The Park's 2026 news is about other works: the southern ambulacra, the new lighting, the night visits. In July 2026 the family travel site PianetaMamma wrote that the plans for the arena are "bloccati a causa di un aumento dei costi" (blocked by rising costs). We found no official statement that confirms or dates this, so treat it as a report, not a decision.
What is clear: anyone selling you a tour on the promise of a "new" or "full" arena floor in 2026 or 2027 is selling something that does not exist.

What do you walk on when you visit the arena floor today?
A reconstructed wooden platform at the east end of the arena, laid around 2000 on the model of the Roman floor. It covers part of the oval, not all of it.
The platform sits at the level the gladiators fought on. Stand at the rail and the hypogeum walls drop away beside you, with the tiers rising on every side. Every arena product leads here: the Full Experience Arena ticket (EUR 24, with the first and second levels), the 24h Only Arena ticket (EUR 18, 20 minutes, in and out at the Sperone Stern side), and every tour sold with "arena access".
There is no other arena to walk on, whatever a listing calls it. "Gladiator's Gate" options enter through the arched passage onto the same platform. Our guide to whether the arena floor is worth it looks at what that view gives you that the upper tiers don't.

Fifteen people at most, a certified guide, and the arena floor in the base ticket.

Two finished projects: Stefano Boeri's travertine paving of the southern ambulacra outside the monument, opened in March 2026, and a new LED lighting system by Francesca Storaro, in its final phase in September 2026.
On the south side, where the outer ring of the amphitheatre collapsed centuries ago, the 19th-century cobbles have gone. Il Post reported on 18 March 2026 that Boeri's design brings the ground back to its Roman level in travertine from the Barco quarry, with 44 raised blocks marking the lost piers, which double as seats. The EUR 2.2 million came from compensation funds for the Metro C line.
The lighting replaces the old orange floodlights with 120 LED projectors set at the travertine base and under the lower arches, giving a whiter light that can be tuned warmer or cooler. It is funded by Tod's as part of its long-running sponsorship and costs about EUR 5.4 million, according to Il Post.
During that work, on the night of 22 September 2026, a 22-year-old technician died after a fall inside the monument. The Park closed the Colosseum from 23 September and reopened on Saturday 26 September. Some tours on those days were cancelled or refunded, which is why a few autumn reviews mention a closure.
| Project | Where | Designer | Cost | Status, Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Southern ambulacra paving | Outside, south side | Stefano Boeri Interiors | EUR 2.2 million | Open since March 2026 |
| LED lighting | Exterior arches and base | Francesca Storaro | About EUR 5.4 million | Final phase in autumn 2026 |
| New arena floor | Inside, whole arena | Milan Ingegneria, Labics | EUR 18.5 million | Not built |
What does the arena floor project mean for booking an arena tour now?
Nothing changes: the platform is the arena experience for the foreseeable future. Book for what exists, and pick an option that names the arena.
There is no reason to wait for the new floor. No date exists, and when work does start, parts of the arena may well close for a while. The current platform gives you the view that matters: arena level, hypogeum below, tiers above.
What to watch is the option, not the floor. Several listings sell a cheaper option without the arena next to one with it. Tours with the arena in every option include Crown Tours, Roman Vacations and Journey Tours. If the official EUR 24 ticket is available for your date and you don't want a guide, it is the cheapest way onto the same planks. Our arena ticket guide covers when they go on sale.
One last thing: closures can happen at short notice, as September showed. Book with free cancellation and keep a backup day if Rome is a one-shot trip.

Arena floor in the base price, a licensed guide inside, then the Forum and the Palatine.

Is the Colosseum getting a new floor?
A full new arena floor was designed in 2021 and promised for 2023, but it has not been built. As of October 2026 no completion date has been announced.
How old is the Colosseum arena floor you walk on?
The wooden platform at the east end was laid around 2000, on the model of the Roman floor. It covers part of the arena; the rest of the hypogeum is open to the sky.
Can you walk across the whole Colosseum arena?
No. Visitors stand on the platform at the east end. Walking the full oval would need the new floor, which does not exist yet.
Was the Colosseum closed in September 2026?
Yes, from 23 September after a worker died in a fall during the lighting works. It reopened on Saturday 26 September.
