Booking choice: The Crown Tours arena tour, from $91 per person. Check dates Tour details
The Parco archeologico del Colosseo has spent three years fighting ticket hoarding. First came named tickets, then an antitrust case, and in spring 2026 a tighter set of rules: a name can be changed only once, only for a few reasons, and only up to a week before the visit. At the same time the Park moved where you can buy a ticket in person and moved against about 30 tour operators it caught buying public tickets under fake names.
None of this changes the price of the arena. It changes what you have to get right at the moment you book, especially if a tour company buys the ticket for you.
The quick answer
Every ticket is issued in one visitor's name and checked against an ID at the gate, children included. For visits from 9 May 2026 a name can be corrected once, by email, up to midnight seven days before, and only for a typo, a documented emergency or a wrong fare. Since 4 May, 24h tickets are sold in person only at the Piazza del Colosseo office. Give every tour the exact passport names on the day you book.
What changed in the Colosseum ticket rules in 2026?
Three things: a strict one-time name-change rule for visits from 9 May, a new split between the ticket offices from 4 May, and a crackdown on operators who bought public tickets with fake names.
The details were set out by RomaToday on 3 May 2026. The core idea is old: since late 2023 every ticket has carried the visitor's name. What was missing was enforcement. Agencies and resellers kept buying tickets on the public website under invented names and swapped in their real customers later. Il Post reported in April 2026 that 96% of underground tickets had been bought this way, with thousands of false identities.
The new rules close that gap. If a name cannot be changed freely, a ticket bought under a fake one is worthless. For you that is mostly good news: more tickets should reach the official site at base price. The catch is that a typo, a nickname or a missing middle name is now your problem, and the window to fix it is short.
| Change | From | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Name change once, by email, for 3 reasons only | Visits from 9 May 2026 | Enter exact passport names when you book |
| 24h tickets sold in person only at Piazza del Colosseo | 4 May 2026 | The other offices sell only the Forum Pass SUPER |
| About 30 operators to lose B2B access | Announced May 2026 | Some tour slots may move or vanish |
| ID check at the gate for every named ticket | Since late 2023 | Bring ID for each traveller, children too |
Can you change the name on a Colosseum ticket?
Once, and only in three cases: an obvious typo, documented force majeure such as illness or bereavement, or the wrong fare type. The request goes by email and must arrive by midnight on the seventh day before the visit.
That is the rule for every ticket dated 9 May 2026 or later, as reported by RomaToday. Selling a ticket on, or giving it to a friend because you cannot go, is not one of the three cases. Nor is a late change of travel party. If one of four people drops out six days before, that ticket is lost.
The seven-day cut-off matters for tours as much as for official tickets. Operators buy named tickets for their groups, so they need your names before that deadline. Walks, for example, accepts name corrections up to seven days before, and Crown Tours asks for the full name and birth date of each guest at booking. Treat the booking form like an airline form.
Practical rule: copy names from the passport, in the same order, with every given name the passport shows. Spell accents the way the document does. Do not use nicknames, even for kids.

Where can you buy Colosseum tickets in person since May 2026?
Only at the Piazza del Colosseo office for the 24h Colosseum, Forum and Palatine ticket. The offices at Largo della Salara Vecchia and in the Forum area now sell only the Forum Pass SUPER.
The Park keeps about 18% of each day's tickets for sale on site, according to the same report. From 4 May 2026 those 24h tickets are sold at one window only, next to the monument. Turn up at the Forum entrance hoping for a Colosseum ticket and you will be sent back.
Arena tickets are a different story. The Full Experience Arena ticket (EUR 24) goes on sale online seven days ahead, and the 24h Only Arena ticket (EUR 18) lets you onto the floor for 20 minutes. In busy months both are often gone online long before the day. If you want the arena, plan on ticketing.colosseo.it or a tour, not on the queue.
Arena floor in the base ticket, a licensed guide, then the Forum and the Palatine.

The Park found about 30 operators buying tickets on the public channel under fake names, then reselling them to their customers. It announced their suspension from the trade (B2B) channel, with fines to follow.
Tour companies have their own allocation through the Park's B2B accreditation. Some of them also raided the public site, where tickets are meant for individual visitors, using made-up names. RomaToday reported that one booking was made in the name of the singer Dua Lipa. The Park's answer was to cut those operators off from the trade channel.
This is not the first round. In April 2025 Italy's competition authority AGCM fined CoopCulture, the ticket concession holder from 1997 to 2024, EUR 7 million, and six resellers and tour sellers (Tiqets, GetYourGuide, Walks, Italy With Family, City Wonders and Musement) for a total of about EUR 20 million, over years in which bots hoarded base-price tickets (ANSA, 8 April 2025).
What it means for you: an operator that loses access cannot buy for its groups, so a few tour slots may change or disappear. A reliable operator will tell you early and refund. Read recent reviews for words like "time changed" or "no arena" before you pay.
Should you buy from the touts at the Colosseo metro?
No. A ticket bought from a stranger is issued in someone else's name, and the gate checks your ID against it.
The people offering "skip the line" outside the Colosseo metro exit sell one of two things: a ticket in another person's name, which will not get you in, or a place on a tour you know nothing about. Il Post describes on-site tickets being bought up and resold on the street at a markup. No ticket skips the security check either; everyone goes through it.
If you arrive without a ticket, go to the official office on Piazza del Colosseo or check the Park's site on your phone. If both are sold out, book a tour with a clear option list on a reputable platform, not from the pavement.

What should you check before your Colosseum visit?
Exact passport names for every traveller, ID on the day, the option name on your tour, and what happens if the operator moves your time.
- Names: every traveller, children included, exactly as on the passport. Under-18s enter free but still need a named, reserved ticket for arena and Full Experience visits.
- ID: a passport or ID card for each person. Some operators say a copy on your phone is accepted; carry the original to be safe.
- Option: make sure the option you booked names the arena. Some listings sell a cheaper option without it, as our arena ticket guide explains.
- Time changes: named tickets are tied to a slot. If a tour moves your time, ask in writing whether the new slot still includes the arena. If it does not, ask for a refund or a full-price swap, and do it before the free-cancellation deadline (3 days for most tours here, 7 for Touriks and Roman Vacations).
- Arrive early: 15 to 30 minutes for security. Large bags are not allowed and there is no storage.
If you can get the official ticket and do not need a guide, buy it. If you can't, a tour with the arena in the base price, such as the Crown Tours arena tour or the Roman Vacations small group, takes the name juggling off your hands. Our comparison of tour vs ticket goes through the trade-off.

Fifteen people at most, a certified guide, and the arena floor written into the base inclusions.

Do children need ID at the Colosseum?
Yes. Tickets are named for every visitor, including children who enter free, and the name is checked at the gate. A passport or a photo of it works with most operators.
What happens if the name on my Colosseum ticket is misspelled?
For visits from 9 May 2026 you can ask by email for one correction, up to midnight seven days before the visit. After that, staff can refuse entry if the name does not match your ID.
Can I give my Colosseum ticket to someone else?
No. A change of person is not one of the accepted reasons for a name change. If you cannot go, the ticket is lost unless the seller's own cancellation terms cover it.
Can I buy a Colosseum ticket at the Forum entrance?
Not a 24h Colosseum ticket since 4 May 2026. The Forum-side offices sell only the Forum Pass SUPER; the Colosseum ticket is sold in person at Piazza del Colosseo.
