Roman Vacations · Celio, near the Colosseum

A small-group arena tour with Roman Vacations

A certified guide takes no more than 15 people through the Forum, the Palatine and the Colosseum, arena floor included. Pick it for the group size: it's the smallest group here where the arena comes in the base price.

Small-Group Colosseum & Forum with Arena Floor

About this experience

Roman Vacations meets at its own office on Via dei Santi Quattro, a quiet street on the Celio a few minutes' walk uphill from the Colosseum. Look for the white flag with a lion's head. The base option is called Small Group Arena Floor Access, and the listing writes access to the arena floor into the inclusions for the whole product, along with the EUR 24 Colosseum ticket and the EUR 2 booking fee.

The cap is 15 people, against 24 or 25 on most arena tours. In a building this crowded, that matters: guests mention a guide who waits, takes photos for them and fits in water and toilet stops. The listed route starts in the Forum and on the Palatine and ends inside the Colosseum, though some groups run it the other way round. Guests clock the whole thing at about 3 hours and roughly 2.5 miles of walking, a little longer than the 2h30 on the listing.

The VIP options shrink the group further: VIP Extra Small Group (5 at most, other sellers say), VIP Early Bird, VIP Small Afternoon and a longer Premier VIP Emperors Tour that adds the Imperial Forums. They cost more; check the option list. The one weak spot is the meeting point. It's on a side street, and one couple never found it despite help on the phone, so pin it on your map before you leave. If you want an even smaller group, the LivTours max-6 tour caps at six, but its arena is an option, not the base.

  • Fifteen people at most on the base option
  • Arena floor in the base ticket, not an add-on
  • A certified guide for the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine
  • VIP options down to about five guests
  • Stroller accessible, per the listing

What guests say

★★★★★

this Colosseum tour was hands-down our favorite of them all!!! [...] Regarding Roman Vacations in general, check-in was a breeze, everyone was so friendly, and the skip-the-line access was a huge perk!

We had a small group of interested people and our guide was super generous with his time, answered all of our questions, made sure everyone felt comfortable, and the tour flew by. [...] Several water and bathroom stops.

He brought the Coliseum and Palantine Hill to life by sharing details that helped one see what it was like during the various eras of building, destroying, and "repurposing" this history dense section of Rome.

Amazing tour! The entire tour took 3 hours. Moderately strenuous. A lot of walking involved. According to my fitbit, around 2.5 miles in total. The tour guide was super knowledgeable and personable.

Tips before you book

  • Save the office on your map the day before. It's on Via dei Santi Quattro, uphill from the Colosseum, not at the monument.
  • If Roman Vacations moves your time, get the new time in writing. One guest wrote that the voucher and reminders kept showing the old one.
  • Bring an umbrella in autumn. Two September reviews describe the tour carrying on through a thunderstorm.
  • Wear proper shoes. Guests measured about 2.5 miles over cobbles, ruts and steps.
  • Add the youth and child ages correctly when you book. Tickets are named and checked against ID at the gate.
