Colosseum arena floor tickets

Three official tickets put you on the arena floor, and the most common Colosseum ticket does not. Here is what each one costs, when it opens, and how to get onto the platform when the calendar shows nothing left.

The Parco archeologico del Colosseo sells six different Colosseum tickets, and only three of them take you down to arena level. They look alike in the shop, they cost €18 to €32, and they open for sale on different days. Pick the wrong one and you spend your visit looking at the platform from the first tier.

Prices and rules below come from the Park's own ticket pages and the Park's Colosseum page, checked in October 2026. Tour prices are the USD from-prices on Viator on the same day.

The quick answer

The arena floor comes with three official tickets: Full Experience Arena (€24, on sale 7 days ahead), 24h Only Arena (€18, 20 minutes on the floor) and Full Experience Underground and Arena (€24, or €32 with the Park's guided tour, on sale 30 days ahead). The standard €18 Colosseum, Forum and Palatine ticket does not include it. Add €2 per ticket for booking. When everything is sold out, a tour that holds arena tickets is the fallback, but check that the option you buy names the arena.

Which Colosseum tickets include the arena floor?

Three: Full Experience Arena, 24h Only Arena and Full Experience Underground and Arena. The standard 24h ticket and the Attic ticket do not.

Every ticket also covers the Roman Forum and the Palatine. The online booking fee is €2 per ticket on top, free tickets included. Official tickets are sold only on ticketing.colosseo.it and at the Park's own ticket offices. Anyone else selling you a "Colosseum ticket" is selling a tour or a resale.

What does the €24 Full Experience Arena ticket cover?

The arena platform, the first and second levels with the Colosseum museum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine, over two consecutive days.

This is the ticket most people mean when they say arena floor ticket. You enter the Colosseum once, at the time you booked, and can stay up to 90 minutes inside. The Forum and Palatine part of the ticket stays valid across the two days, so you can do the Colosseum on a morning and the Forum the next afternoon.

Two rules catch people out. Entry is only at your booked slot: the Park's FAQ answers the question of entering at a different time with a flat "It is not possible." And the 90 minutes cover the whole Colosseum, arena and tiers together. Guided groups make a short stop on the platform and spend the rest upstairs.

From the platform the tiers rise all round you. The Full Experience ticket adds the view back down from them.

Is the €18 Only Arena ticket worth it?

If you have seen the tiers before or are short of time, yes. It gives 20 minutes on the floor and nothing else inside the Colosseum.

The 24h Only Arena ticket gets you in and out on the Sperone Stern side, the eastern buttress, straight onto the platform. No first level, no second level, no museum. It still includes the Forum and the Palatine within 24 hours.

For €6 more the Full Experience Arena ticket adds both levels and a two-day window. On a first visit that is the better buy: the view down from the second tier is half the point. The Only Arena ticket earns its place on a repeat visit, or as a backup when the Full Experience slots for your day are gone but Only Arena slots are not.

When do Colosseum arena tickets go on sale?

Full Experience Arena tickets open 7 days before the visit; the underground and the standard ticket open 30 days before.

The short window is the reason the arena sells out. In busy months the good slots go quickly once the window opens. Set a reminder for the day the window opens and book as soon as you can.

A tour can be booked long before the official window opens, because operators get their tickets through a separate allocation. That is the main thing you pay a tour for, and it is why the tour or ticket question has no single answer.

How much do children and young EU citizens pay?

Under-18s enter free but still need a reserved ticket with the €2 fee. EU citizens aged 18 to 24 pay a reduced €2.

Free does not mean ticketless. The Park asks that 24h Only Arena and Full Experience tickets be booked for children too, each in the child's name, and staff check ID at the gate. Bring a passport or ID card for every child.

Tours price children by their own age bands, which differ from the Park's. On Viator, Crown Tours counts 6 to 17 as children, Journey Tours 5 to 17, The Tour Guy 7 to 17 as youth, and the night tour charges the adult price from 13. Because the ticket inside is free, a child's tour price is mostly the guide.

Every visitor, child or adult, needs a named ticket to reach this level.

How do you buy arena tickets on ticketing.colosseo.it?

Create an account, pick the ticket by name, choose the date and slot, enter each visitor's name exactly as on their ID, and pay the €2 fee per ticket.

  1. Pick the ticket by its exact name. "Full Experience Arena", not "Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine".
  2. Choose the date and slot. The slot is your entry time to the Colosseum, and you cannot change it at the gate.
  3. Enter every name as printed on the passport. Tickets are nominative and checked against ID.
  4. Pay and keep the QR codes on your phone, plus the ID that matches each name.

Names matter more in 2026. For visits from 9 May 2026 a name can be changed only once, by email, until midnight on the seventh day before the visit, and only for a typo, a documented illness or bereavement, or a wrong fare type, RomaToday reported. Since 4 May 2026 the in-person sale of the standard 24h ticket has moved to the Piazza del Colosseo office alone. More in the 2026 ticket rules post.

What if Colosseum arena tickets are sold out?

Try the Only Arena ticket, check the Park's ticket office on the day, or book a tour whose chosen option names the arena.

  • Switch ticket. When Full Experience Arena is gone, 24h Only Arena slots sometimes are not.
  • Go to the ticket office. The Park sells Full Experience Arena at its office on the day as well, and about 18% of daily tickets are sold on site, per RomaToday. Get there before opening and accept that it may not work.
  • Book a tour. Operators hold arena tickets from their own allocation. Read the option name: several listings sell a version without the arena.
  • Skip the touts. People outside Colosseo metro sell tours at a markup, not official tickets. The ticket concession holder and six resellers were fined in April 2025 for bot-hoarded tickets, and in 2026 the Park moved to suspend operators caught buying public tickets under fake names.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy Colosseum arena floor tickets at the gate?

Sometimes. The Park sells Full Experience Arena at its ticket office on the day while slots last, and a share of each day's tickets is kept for on-site sale. In busy months the arena slots are often gone online first, so do not count on it.

Is the arena floor included in the standard Colosseum ticket?

No. The standard €18 Colosseum, Forum and Palatine ticket covers the first and second levels only. You need the €24 Full Experience Arena, the €18 Only Arena or the underground ticket to stand on the platform.

How far in advance should I book arena floor tickets?

Book Full Experience Arena on the day it opens, 7 days before your visit, and the underground ticket the day it opens, 30 days before. Tours can be booked months ahead and most cancel free up to 3 days before.

Do I need a passport for the arena floor ticket?

You need a photo ID that matches the name on each ticket, for adults and children. A passport, national ID card or driving licence works. Some tour operators also accept a copy on your phone; the Park's own tickets are checked against the original.
