A private tour with the underground

Your own guide for three hours: the Colosseum's tiers and arena, the Roman Forum and the Palatine, plus the hypogeum below the arena floor. Book it for the underground with a private guide around it, and only if you are sure of your date, because it is non-refundable.

Private Underground, Arena & Ancient Rome Tour

About this experience

Tours of Rome sells this as a private full-experience tour: a guide for your group only, about two hours in the Colosseum and an hour between the Palatine and the Forum. The Colosseum part covers the first and second tiers, the arena platform and the underground, on the Park's Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket. Guests from earlier seasons describe guides who stopped for photos, let them set the pace and stayed past the end time.

The underground is not private. Park rules put the hypogeum visit in a group led by a Colosseum archaeologist; your guide hands you over and picks you up afterwards. Underground tickets go on sale 30 days ahead and are limited, so the start time can move once the operator knows its slot, and you get a message with the new time. If no underground tickets can be had, you are offered the normal tour with a partial refund, or a cancellation with a full refund. In dangerous rain the underground closes, and you get 45 minutes on the arena floor instead, looking down into the chambers.

The price is per person, and the $516 from-price is the per-person rate for a private group; check the total for your party size. It is non-refundable and cannot be changed for any reason, including illness. A few older reviews (2023 and 2024) describe a missed underground and a guide who lost time in the lines. If you can plan 30 days out, compare the Park's own Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket, EUR 24 or EUR 32 with the Park's guided tour.

  • Underground, arena floor and both tiers on one ticket
  • Your own guide for the tiers, the Forum and the Palatine
  • The underground led by a Park archaeologist
  • Partial or full refund if underground tickets fail
  • Stroller accessible, according to the listing

What guests say

★★★★★

This exceptional private tour of the colosseum is 100% worth the money. [...] The underground portion of the tour must be led by a special type of tour guide (Italy's rules), but she dropped us with that guide and was there to pick us up when we were done.

We loved having a private tour, it ended up just being me and my husband on the tour. [...] During the underground part, we were part of a larger tour (as expected), and that tour guide also had a lot of interesting information to share.

This was hands-down our favorite tour in Rome. [...] The underground portion was so unique and special, plus as a bonus we avoided the crowds. Our family of 5 (kids ages 16, 13, 10) can't stop talking about it!

Philomena was so knowledgeable and kind. She showed us information about what these archeological finds looked like in their “ prime” and how the citizens used these spaces. She made everything come to life!

Tips before you book

  • Treat the booking as final. Buy travel insurance that covers non-refundable tours if your plans are loose.
  • Give every full name exactly as on the passport. Entry tickets are named and handed to you at the meeting point.
  • Go to the LOWER exit of Colosseo metro, not the upper one. The listing says it in capitals for a reason.
  • Leave luggage, big backpacks and selfie sticks behind: the Colosseum refuses them.
  • Save the operator's WhatsApp. Time changes come by message, and guests who missed one turned up late.

Frequently asked questions

Is the private Colosseum underground tour refundable?

No. The listing says it is non-refundable and cannot be changed for any reason. The one exception is on the operator's side: if it can't get underground tickets, you get the normal tour with a partial refund, or a full refund if the tour is cancelled.

Is the underground part private?

No. Park rules require the hypogeum visit to run in a group led by a Colosseum archaeologist. Your private guide hands you over and meets you afterwards, then leads the rest of the tour.

What happens if it rains?

In dangerous rain the underground can be closed. You then get 45 minutes on the arena floor, where you see down into the underground sections without walking through them.

How is the price worked out?

Per person, for a private group. The from-price of $516 is the per-person rate on the smallest tier, and everyone from age 2 to 80 pays the same rate. Check the total for your party size on the booking page.
