Colosseum night tour

The Park opens the Colosseum on selected evenings for a guided hour on the arena and in the underground. Plenty of tours called evening, sunset or night are not that visit. Here is how to tell them apart.

After dark the Colosseum empties out, the stone turns gold under the lights, and the underground is open to a few groups of 25. The Park's official night visit, Una Notte al Colosseo, is the only way inside at that hour, and in 2026 it runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings until 26 November.

On Viator, the night tour listed on this site sells two options with similar names and very different visits. Reviews from 2026 show guests booking the cheaper one and getting a daytime slot. Below: the official visit, the tour, and what to book instead if neither fits.

The quick answer

The official night visit runs from 14 July to 26 November 2026, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 11 pm: about 60 minutes guided on the first level, the arena floor and the underground, €50 (€24 ticket plus €26 guide), groups of 25, tickets online 7 days ahead. On the Viator night tour, only the "Night Tour (With UG)" option is that visit; the "Evening Tour (No UG)" option has neither the arena nor the underground. For a cooler daytime visit, book the last slots of the afternoon.

Can you visit the Colosseum at night in 2026?

Yes, on the Park's Una Notte al Colosseo visits: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 14 July to 26 November 2026, 8 to 11 pm, last entry 9:50 pm.

The night openings first ran to late August and were then extended. In August the Park also added Friday and Saturday evenings to meet demand, as Euronews reported. For the autumn the pattern is back to Tuesday and Thursday. Dates and remaining slots are on the event page of the ticket shop.

Outside those evenings the Colosseum closes at the normal time, 4:30 pm in winter. Any "night tour" on another day is a daytime or late-afternoon visit with an evening-sounding name.

What does the official night visit include?

About an hour with a guide: in through the north arch, along the first level, out onto the arena floor, then down into the underground.

Visits start at the north arch, the ancient emperor's entrance, take in the stucco decoration of the passage, cross the first level and go out onto the arena. From there the group goes down into the hypogeum and the permanent exhibition on the protagonists of the games, then follows the new walkways through the western service area. Groups are capped at 25.

The tone is different from a day visit. The Park frames the night tour around the spectators and fighters of a show day, the hunts in the morning and the gladiators later on. The ticket is a Full Experience type and also gets you into the Roman Forum and Palatine around your visit date.

The Night Tour (With UG) option of this listing is the official evening opening with the underground.

Is the Viator Colosseum night tour the official night visit?

Only its "Colosseum Night Tour (With UG)" option. The "Colosseum Evening Tour (No UG)" option is a different visit without the arena or the underground.

The listing on this site, run by Discover Rome Tours staff, sells two options:

What do guests report about evening slots?

Several 2026 guests booked expecting a night visit and got a late-afternoon or daytime slot without the arena or the underground.

The reviews tell a consistent story. In July and August guests described tours at 4:30 or 5 pm in full daylight, with crowds and no arena or underground. One June guest says the operator confirmed arena access in writing and it still did not happen. Another, in July, was handed tickets without the arena and offered money back. In October a guest's tour ended before the lights came on, and another was rescheduled twice and then given tickets for the wrong date.

Partial refunds of around 15% come up more than once. If you booked the night option and are offered an evening slot instead, ask for a full refund in writing through Viator; the official visit is cheaper booked direct if slots remain. The good reviews come from guests who got the real thing: "they allow a very limited number of groups in at night, so it is likely the least busy you will see it!"

What are the best late-afternoon alternatives?

The last day slots before closing: cooler in summer, thinner crowds, softer light. The late-afternoon Crown Tours arena tour is built around them.

If no night date fits, the last two hours of the day are the next best thing. The late-afternoon arena tour by Crown Tours includes the arena in every option, covers the Colosseum only (no Forum, no underground), and offers private versions in English, German, Spanish and French. Guests in 2025 praised the thinner crowds at the 4:30 pm start. One June 2026 guest was moved to an earlier time and lost the arena, so confirm the slot.

Remember how early the light goes in winter. From 25 October 2026 the Colosseum closes at 4:30 pm with last entry at 3:30 pm, so a late visit then means early afternoon. The best time to visit guide has the full calendar.

Can you see the Colosseum lit up at night for free?

Yes. The exterior is floodlit every night and you can walk all the way round it at no cost.

The outer ring is lit after sunset all year. The classic high view is from Largo Gaetana Agnesi, the terrace above the upper exit of Colosseo metro; Via dei Fori Imperiali gives the long view from the Forum side, and the Arch of Constantine stands beside the south side. It costs nothing and takes half an hour.

If you can only do one evening thing, do this on any night and save the paid visit for a Tuesday or Thursday when you can get a ticket for the inside.

The outer ring is free to walk round, day or night.

Is the Colosseum night tour worth it?

The official visit is, at €50 with a guide, the arena and the underground. An evening tour without them is not worth a night-tour price.

Do the arithmetic: the underground ticket alone is €24 and the Park's guided version €32 in the day, so €50 for a guided night hour with the arena, the underground and a near-empty monument is fair. Guests who got the real night visit say it was the calmest the Colosseum ever gets.

What is not worth it: paying a night price for a daytime or evening slot with the standard €18 ticket inside. Book the official visit direct if it has space; if not, book the tour's Night Tour (With UG) option, not the Evening one, and treat a slot change as a reason to cancel.
