Colosseum underground tour

The hypogeum is the hardest part of the Colosseum to reach. One official ticket, one night visit and a handful of tour options get you down there. Arena tours, whatever their titles say, do not.

Under the arena ran the hypogeum: two levels of corridors, pens and lift shafts, built under Domitian after the amphitheatre opened in AD 80. Animals and scenery rose through trapdoors into the games. Today the floor above is gone and the hypogeum lies open, visible from every tier. Walking through it is another matter.

Visits run in small groups at fixed times, with the Park's own staff, and tickets are few. This guide covers the official route, the night visit and every tour option on this site that includes the underground, with the catches that come with each.

The quick answer

Three routes lead underground: the official Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket (€24, or €32 with the Park's guided tour, released 30 days ahead and gone fast), the Park's night visit in season (€50 with a guide), or a tour option that holds underground tickets. On this site those are Touriks' UNDERGROUND option, Crown Tours' Colosseum Underground English option, Walks' Private Underground Tour, Show Me Italy's Special Underground Access and the private Tours of Rome tour. Arena floor options do not include the underground.

What is the Colosseum underground?

The hypogeum: the service level below the arena, where animals, fighters and stage machinery waited before being lifted into the games.

The hypogeum is a maze of walls running the length of the arena, with a central corridor and dozens of side passages. Lifts worked by capstans raised cages and scenery to trapdoors in the wooden floor. Visitors now walk a raised path through part of it, past the reconstructed lift and the permanent exhibition "Spettacoli nell'Arena del Colosseo. I Protagonisti", about the gladiators and animals.

It is cooler and quieter than the tiers, and the walls are higher than they look from above. That is the reason people chase this ticket.

How do you get into the Colosseum underground?

With the official Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket, the Park's night visit, or a tour that has underground tickets for your slot.

  • Official ticket: Full Experience Underground and Arena, €24, or €32 with the Park's educational guided tour. On sale 30 days ahead.
  • Night visit: the Park's Una Notte al Colosseo covers the first level, the arena and the underground with a guide, €50, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in season. See the night visit guide.
  • A tour option: a handful of listings sell an underground option; the operator holds the ticket and you join a Park group for the underground part.

No other ticket gets you below. The standard ticket, Only Arena and Full Experience Arena all stop at the platform.

How do you book the official underground ticket?

On ticketing.colosseo.it, 30 days before your date, for a fixed slot. It costs €24, or €32 with the Park's educational tour, plus the €2 fee.

The Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket covers the underground and the arena, valid over two consecutive days, with up to 90 minutes in the Colosseum. The Park describes underground access as subject to availability, and in season the slots for a given day go fast. Book the day the window opens, with each visitor's name as on their ID.

The €32 version adds the Park's own educational guided tour, which is the cheapest way to have the underground explained to you. Under-18s are free but need a reserved ticket; EU citizens aged 18 to 24 pay €2. If your date is gone, the night visit and the tour options below are what is left.

Underground sold out on the official site? Touriks sells a private UNDERGROUND option with the Forum and Palatine.

Which tours include the Colosseum underground?

Only specific options: Touriks UNDERGROUND, Crown Tours Colosseum Underground English, Walks Private Underground Tour, Show Me Italy Special Underground Access, and the private Tours of Rome tour.

On each of these listings the underground is one option among several. The from-price you see first is a cheaper option without it.

The private Tours of Rome tour is the only one here with the underground in its base price, plus both tiers, the arena, the Forum and the Palatine. It is non-refundable, which is a real risk for a ticket this scarce. One Show Me Italy guest in October 2026 reported paying for the tunnels and not going down. Confirm the underground slot in writing before the day.

Will your own guide take you into the underground?

Usually not. The underground part runs in a group led by Park staff, and private guides hand you over at the entrance.

The Tours of Rome listing says it directly: because of rules set by the Colosseum authorities, the underground part is conducted by an archaeologist of the Colosseum and is in a group. Guests on that tour describe the same handover: their private guide dropped them with the Park's guide for the underground and picked them up afterwards, and they joined a larger group below.

Plan for it. "Private" on an underground tour means private for the tiers, the arena and the Forum, not for the hypogeum. The Park's groups are capped, so the underground part is still calmer than the tiers.

What happens if it rains or underground tickets fall through?

Heavy rain can close the underground walkway; on the private tour you then get 45 minutes on the arena instead. If tickets cannot be booked, expect a partial refund or a cancellation.

The Tours of Rome listing spells out both cases. In dangerous rain it can be impossible to walk inside the underground, and you get 45 minutes on the arena floor looking down into it. If the operator cannot book underground tickets, you are offered the normal tour with a partial refund, or a full refund. Start times also move to match the underground slot the Park assigns.

Older reviews show what that looks like: a 2023 guest whose underground tickets were not bought in time saw the hypogeum only from above; another got a partial refund when the underground closed. If the underground was the reason you booked, take the full refund and rebook rather than accept a downgraded day.

Do Colosseum arena floor tours include the underground?

No. Arena tours look down into the hypogeum from the platform; they do not enter it.

This is the most common misunderstanding in the reviews. A Journey Tours guest in October 2026 expected the full experience below and got the main floor. Another wished the underground had been included given the price. On Touriks, several guests thought they had paid for the underground because it is in the listing title, when the ARENA option they booked excludes it. Touriks' listing is explicit: the ARENA options include neither the underground nor the regular levels.

Read the inclusion line, not the title. Underground options say "underground" in their option name.

From an arena tour you see this from the railing. Getting down there takes a different ticket.

Is the underground worth it over the arena floor?

Yes, if you can get it. It includes the arena too, costs the same €24 officially, and guests rank it above everything else in the building.

The official underground ticket is the arena ticket plus the hypogeum, at the same price. The trade-off is availability and the fixed group slot. Guests on the private tour call the underground part "so unique and special" and, from another review, "a really cool part to the tour that is away from the crowds."

Our advice: try for the official ticket on day 30. If it is gone, book a tour's underground option with free cancellation and keep checking. If none of that works, the arena floor with a good guide is a fine second best, and the arena floor verdict explains why.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Colosseum underground ticket?

€24 for the Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket, or €32 with the Park's educational guided tour, plus a €2 booking fee. EU citizens aged 18 to 24 pay €2, and under-18s are free with a reserved ticket.

How far ahead do Colosseum underground tickets go on sale?

30 days before the visit on ticketing.colosseo.it. In busy months book on the day they open; the slots are few and go fast.

Is the Colosseum underground open in winter?

Yes, it is sold year round, subject to availability, with shorter opening hours from late October. Heavy rain can close the underground walkway on the day.

Can children visit the Colosseum underground?

Yes. Under-18s enter free but need their own named ticket, and tour options set their own age bands. The walkway has steps and uneven sections, so strollers are a problem.
