Booking choice: The small-group arena tour, from $97 per person. Check dates Tour details
The Colosseum opens at 8:30 every morning of the year except 1 January and 25 December. When it closes depends on the date, from 4:30 pm in winter to 7:15 pm in summer, and the arena platform has no shade at any hour. Timing your visit well is the cheapest upgrade there is.
Below: the 2026 hours, the best slots and months, what changes in July and August, the free first Sunday, the closures and the booking lead time for each ticket.
The quick answer
Book the 8:30 am slot on a weekday: the arena is cool and the tiers are at their emptiest. The late afternoon is the second-best slot and the softest light. November to February has the fewest people, July and August the most heat and shortened tours. From 25 October 2026 the Colosseum closes at 4:30 pm. Book Full Experience Arena 7 days ahead and the underground 30 days ahead.

What are the Colosseum opening hours in 2026?
Every day from 8:30 am. Closing varies from 4:30 pm in winter to 7:15 pm in summer, with last entry an hour earlier. Closed 1 January and 25 December.
| Period | Opening hours | Last entry |
|---|---|---|
| 2 January to 15 February | 8:30 am to 4:30 pm | 3:30 pm |
| 16 February to 15 March | 8:30 am to 5 pm | 4 pm |
| 16 March to the last Saturday of March | 8:30 am to 5:30 pm | 4:30 pm |
| Last Sunday of March to 31 August | 8:30 am to 7:15 pm | 6:15 pm |
| September | 8:30 am to 7 pm | 6 pm |
| 1 October to the last Saturday of October | 8:30 am to 6:30 pm | 5:30 pm |
| From 25 October 2026 to 31 December | 8:30 am to 4:30 pm | 3:30 pm |
Arena slots stop before the general last entry; the Park's ticket pages give the last access time for each ticket type, and it moves with the season. Check the calendar on ticketing.colosseo.it for your date.
What time of day is best for the Colosseum?
The first slot, 8:30 am. Second best is the last couple of hours before closing. Midday is the worst, especially on the arena.
At opening the stone is cool, the light is low and the big tour groups have not peaked. The arena platform has no shade at all, and by late morning in summer it is the hottest spot in the building. Morning also suits the Forum and Palatine, which are steep and exposed.
The late afternoon is the alternative. Crowds thin as the day groups leave, and the low sun lights the travertine gold; the late-afternoon arena tour is built around that window. In winter, though, the last slots are early afternoon. Guests on the morning small-group tours mention starting cool and finishing in the Forum with time to explore.

Morning and afternoon small-group tours with the arena included, 15 people at most.
Check dates for the small-group arena tourWhat is the best month to visit the Colosseum?
November to February for the fewest people; April, May, October for the best weather. July and August are the hardest months.
- November to February: the thinnest crowds and easiest tickets, outside the Christmas holidays. Short days and cold wind in the open arena; bring layers.
- March to May: mild, but Easter and spring school trips make it busy. Book early.
- June to August: long opening hours, heavy heat, and peak crowds.
- September and October: warm and still busy, with the night visits running. Even late October is crowded: one guest in October 2026 called the Colosseum extremely crowded and said to go in the off season.
Weekdays beat weekends in every month. Guests also mention Sundays being busy, when the Vatican Museums close and their visitors head here.
Is July or August a bad time to visit the Colosseum?
It is the hottest and most crowded time, and several tours run shorter visits. Go at opening or in the last slots, and carry water.
Operators adjust their tours to the heat. Journey Tours cuts its visit to 2 hours in July and August; Crown Tours runs about 2.5 hours. A Tour Guy guest noted that the tour skips the Palatine when it is too hot. Guests on midday summer tours describe guides hunting for shade before each stop.
If you are in Rome in summer, book the 8:30 slot, bring a refillable bottle (there are fountains on the site) and a hat, and keep the afternoon for something indoors. Or go after dark on a night visit, which the Park extended into November in 2026.

An early or afternoon start, a certified guide, the arena included, and the Forum and Palatine before the heat peaks.
Explore the small-group arena tour Tour detailsIs the Colosseum free on the first Sunday of the month?
Yes, but without the arena. Free tickets are handed out on the day in order of arrival, for the standard Colosseum, Forum and Palatine route only.
On the first Sunday of every month entry is free. Tickets are collected at the Park's offices at Piazza del Colosseo and Largo della Salara Vecchia, first come, first served, and only for the standard route or the Forum Pass. The arena, the underground and the attic are not part of it, per the Park's FAQ.
Expect long lines, then crowded tiers. It is a fine option for a budget visit to the seats. It is the wrong day if the arena is why you are going.
When is the Colosseum closed?
Every year on 1 January and 25 December, plus occasional closures at short notice.
The fixed closures are New Year's Day and Christmas Day. On top of those, the Park sometimes closes with little warning for safety or events: in 2026 the Colosseum closed from 23 to 26 September after an accident during lighting works inside, and several guests mention marathon days when roads around the site were blocked and meeting points hard to reach.
Tours here refund or rebook if the site closes. If you have only one day in Rome, keep the Colosseum away from your last morning, and check the Park's site the day before.
When can you visit the Colosseum at night?
On the Park's evening openings: in 2026, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 11 pm, 14 July to 26 November, with arena and underground.
The night visit is the calmest the Colosseum gets, with groups of 25 and the interior floodlit. It costs €50 with a guide and the arena and underground included, and tickets open 7 days ahead. Outside the season, nothing opens after the normal closing time.
Tours with "evening" or "sunset" in the name are usually daytime slots near closing time. The night tour guide explains which option of the Viator night tour is the real night visit.

How far ahead should you book Colosseum tickets?
On the day each window opens: 7 days ahead for Full Experience Arena and the night visit, 30 days for the underground. Tours can be booked months ahead.

|---|---|---|
| Full Experience Arena (€24) | 7 days before | The day it opens |
| Full Experience Underground and Arena (€24 or €32) | 30 days before | The day it opens |

Tours make sense for long-range planning: book one with free cancellation when you book your flights, then try for the official ticket a week before and cancel the tour if you get it. Keep each tour's deadline in mind: 3 days for most, 7 for Roman Vacations and Touriks, 10 for the night tour. The arena ticket guide walks through the official shop.
Book the date now and keep it flexible: free cancellation up to 7 days before, arena included.

What is the least busy time at the Colosseum?
The 8:30 am opening slot on a weekday, from November to February outside the holidays. The last hour before closing is the next quietest, and the Park's night visits are the calmest of all.

From 25 October 2026 to the end of the year it closes at 4:30 pm, with the last entry at 3:30 pm. It reopens at 8:30 am every day except 25 December and 1 January.
